What is it used for?

It is used in a striking, decorative strip, to fill an area, several lines can be worked close together on the same base staircase, or on separate staircases.

First work a ladder of straight stitches as a base:

Fig. BWith another color, if desired, draw a blunt needle at 1. Pass it under the second stitch above A to B, without piercing the fabric, and draw it out to the left. Repeat until you reach the top.

Each stem stitch passes over two yarns and returns under one, emerging to the left of the bottom stitch. Add as many rows of stem stitch as you need.
