What is it used for?

It is used in fillings or borders and also as a filling stitch.

How do you do that?

It is possible to work diagonally, horizontally or vertically, but diagonally is recommended because it distorts the canvas the least. The horizontal and vertical methods are preferably reserved for small details, where the diagonal method would be inadequate. It is possible to work through two or more intersections of the canvas, rather than one, if a longer type of stitch is required. The stitches are worked over an extended thread, making the rows slightly raised, and the final work particularly strong. Double-threaded canvas is needed.

Fig. E: Bring the needle out at the left end, between double threads, and knit a long stitch to the opposite end of the row. Insert the needle between the double threads, so that the extended stitch is along the double thread.

Fig. E2:Then work the half stitch row from right to left as a horizontal row. Work all rows in the same way. When working long rows, the yarn extension should be done as a series of long stitches, overlapped by a stitch.
