What is it used for?

This hemp stitch is one of the most used and versatile stitches. It is used in backgrounds, filling of large and small surfaces, outlines, coloring and repeating patterns.

How do you do that?

Work from the upper left to the lower right.

Fig. A: Put the needle in q and pull it out in 2, through an intersection. Leave one stitch of the canvas empty. Pull the needle out at 3 and put it in at 4. Repeat the operation up to the lower right side.

Fig. BAt the end of the row, cast off the needle at 5 and cast it in at 6. Then, work backwards to the upper left. The stitches end in the stitches of the canvas from the previous row. Repeat these two rows working the canvas up and down.

The reverse side of the diagonal rows shows a basket weave pattern. If the tapestry stitch is worked in this way, it is less likely to distort the canvas.

Repeat this point as many times as necessary.
