Tutorial for Canvas Stitches: Montenegrin Cross Stitch.

What is it used for?

This stitch is quick to make, it forms a rich and solid line. The repetition of dense rows with horizontal ribs; a reversible knit in which the reverse also has a nice texture. This stitch is similar to the Greek stitch, but with an added vertical stitch on each repeat that makes it denser.

How do you do that?

Work from left to right:

Fig. A: Take the needle out at 1, put it in at 2, take it out at 3 and put it in at 4, crossing the previous long stitch. Bring the needle out again at 3 and bring it in at 5. Bring it out one more time at 3 to start the next repeat to the right.

Fig. B: As the embroidery progresses, each small diagonal arm crosses the two large arms before it. If necessary, an extra half stitch can be worked at the beginning of the row, thus completing the pattern.

Subsequent rows can be worked in the same direction, starting again on the left, or you can work them from one side to the other, turning the piece at the beginning of each row, for a slightly different textural effect.

Materials to embroider Montenegrin cross stitch on canvas:

• You need a sharp pointed needle. In your trusted haberdashery they can advise you on this.
• Canvas fabric
• Thimble, we know that it is not easy to get used to it, but the earlier you adapt, the better, you will avoid many punctures.
• Special thread for sewing. Or you can also use fine crochet yarn if it is to decorate something
• Frame, there are made of wood, plastic and silicone. Lately I spend the silicone ones because I like them better, but that goes to taste.
• Light, the more the better and to be able to be natural
