What is it used for?

Exceptional pattern with the appearance of three-dimensional boxes; suitable for large areas. The three-dimensional effect is enhanced if the stitch is worked with various shades of the same color.

How do you do that?

Start at the top left:

Fig. A; With the first color, cast off at 1, cast on at 2, cast off at 3, cast on at 4, cast off at 5 and cast on at 6, thus completing the three parallel stitches. Make three slant stitches in the opposite direction, from 7 to 6, from 8 to 4 and from 9 to 2. Repeat these six stitches to the right, ending with a complete repeat. Leave the needle at the edge of the work.

Fig. B: Draw the needle with the second color in 1 and slip it into 2, and then make five more stitches from 3 to 4, from 5 to 6, from 7 to 6, from 8 to 4 and from 9 to 2. Repeat to the left. each group of three stitches cross over the same ones below as shown in the picture. At the end of the row, leave the needle as before. Use the first needle and yarn to work the third row from right to left, parallel to and under the second row. At the end of the row, leave the needle as before. Use the second needle and yarn to work the fourth row, from left to right, crossing the stitches of the previous row as shown in the picture. Repeat these four rows.
