What is it used for?

Interesting texture dot, usually working in two or more colors, suitable for large areas and backgrounds. Interesting texture pattern of curled blocks; works quickly.

How do you do that?

Start at the top right:

Fig. ACast off the needle at 1, cast it in at 2, cast it off at 3 and cast it in at 4. Cast off three more stitches as shown, from 5 to 6, from 7 to 8, and from 9 to 10, making a five stitch purl unit with the top yarn slanted. Bring the needle back out at 11 to start the next repeat to the left. Notice that the units are placed apart by strands.

Fig. BWork the next row of units from left to right. Begin by pulling the needle out at 1, two strands below the 7th stitch of the last unit above, in the same order as before so that the units are interlocked as in the pattern. Work the third row in the same way as the first row, interlocking the units with the ones above in the same way as for the second row. Repeat as needed.

If you need to, you can work longer units: if the first point crosses six intersections, each unit will have seven points and so on.
